French region of Brittany and its departments
Côtes-d'Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan
The Brittany region of France on the West Coast has 4 departments, the Côtes-d'Armor,
Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan.
The Weather in this region of France:: As with all the
regions on the west coast of France, the closer you get to the sea, the milder
and dryer the weather becomes. Temperatures on the coast do not vary as much
as they do inland, where they have slightly colder winters and hotter summers.
Brittany’s
rainfall is relatively high all year round, but another constant of the climate
is the changeability of the weather.
The Region: Brittany is on a peninsula of rugged coastline, with hundreds
of coves, inlets, beaches and fishing villages to discover. Pine forests
behind the beaches give way to the rolling fields and woodland of central
and eastern Brittany.
The Brits have always loved this region and it was named by their celtic
ancestors who moved over and populated it. Nowadays it is a favourite destination
for both ex-pats and holiday makers, who enjoy the temperate climate, quaint
villages, beautiful scenery and the beaches.
Medieval towns pepper the countryside, and even the larger towns are attractive.
St Malo’s walled city was destroyed during the last war, but has been
brilliantly rebuilt, reclaiming its medieval majesty and charm.
The Forêt de Brocéliande was the setting for the Arthurian
legends, which are as famous with Bretons as with Brits. But possibly the
most magical sight are the Carnac alignments - 3000 huge standing stones
arranged in rows.
French Gastronomy: Oysters, mussels and other ‘fruits de mer’ dominate
the Brittany cuisine, but simple dishes made with superb ingredients are
the spirit of the local gastronomy. Breton butter, often salted with sea
salt, is used on and in everything. The area is also famous for its galettes
(savoury buckwheat pancakes) crèpes (sweet wheat flour pancakes) cider,
mead and beer. Basically, fresh and well-cared for seafood, milk, apples
and wheat are the root of Brittany’s recipes and dishes.
