Regions in France - Poitou
(Charente, Charente-Maritime,
Deux-Sèvres,
Vienne)
The Poitou region of France consists of 4 different departments, the Charente,
Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and the Vienne.
Weather: The west coast climate means mild winters and
hot summers, with temperatures a little more extreme inland, where rainfall
is also higher.
The Region: Poitou is relatively unspoilt, and its economy
is still largely agricultural. The gently rolling countryside and small family
farms inland give way to expanses of pale sand and rough Atlantic waves on
the beaches.
Oyster farms off the coast produce the unusual blue-tinged oysters of the
Isle d’Oléron, while surfers enjoy the big waves off the beaches.
This region is a gem waiting to be uncovered.
Gastronomy: One traditional food from this region is a
'Tourteau', which is noticeable everywhere, due to its surprising appearance.
It is a round cheesecake, traditionally made with goat's cheese, and it has
a charcoal black crust. Tourteaux are a speciality from Deux-Sèvres.
Local produce is ‘surf and turf’ and includes superb goat cheeses,
melons, oysters, mussels, lamb (often served with 'mijottes' - beans), and
snails. These are often used in the simple, tasty dishes of this area, and
served with local wines - the region’s borders reach down to Bordeaux,
and Cognac is also produced here.
