French Department Burgundy - departments of Côte-d'Or, Nièvre,
Saône-et-Loire,
Yonne
The Burgundy region of France has 4 departments consisting of Côte-d'Or,
Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne.
French Weather: The climate in the north of Burgundy is
continental, but further south the weather is effected by nearby mountains,
which bring cooler temperatures, longer winters and rain. July and August
are dry and warm or hot. Night-times and mornings during the rest of the
summer can be very cool.
The Region: Being on an ancient trade route, Burgundy has
been exposed to culture and learning for millennia. This history has left
its mark on the region, which prides itself on a heritage of art and architecture,
as well as it’s famous wines.
Majestic cities such as Dijon, and beautiful towns like Beaune break up
the rolling countryside, along with châteaux and Romanesque churches.
The two largest monastic reforms originated in Burgundy, and many of the
sights were inspired by the faith of the monks, who created such stunning
buildings and monuments.
French Gastronomy: Both the red and white wines of burgundy
are appreciated by wine lovers everywhere. The red wine often goes into typical
burgundian dishes such as ‘boeuf bourguignon’ and ‘coq
au vin’. The food is very meat-based, with lots of beef and snails,
which are served in wine, mustard (which is another local speciality) or
cream sauces. ‘Jambon persillé’ is a local treat of chunks
of ham set in a terrine with its own jelly and lots of parsley. Regional
cheeses include lots of goat’s cheeses and Chaource. ‘Gougère’ can
describe either a sweet cheesecake of a savoury cheese pastry - both should
be accompanied by a glass of cool chablis.
