French Regions -
Languedoc-Roussillon
( Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère,
Pyrénées-Orientales)
The Languedoc-Roussillon region of France consists of 5 departments, the
Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère and the Pyrénées-Orientales.
Weather: The weather in this region can be dramatic. It
is the 2nd hottest area after Corsica, but has the highest winds in France,
massive storms and violent hail. However, mild winters and long, hot summers
are the norm. Inland is a little cooler than the coast, and micro-climates
in the mountains can vary quite a lot.
The Region: Languedoc-Roussillon is steeped in history;
Cathars, religious wars and invasions. This has left behind a rich culture
and lots of beautiful fortified towns, such as Carcasonne - a restored medieval
citadel - and Béziers, which is known for its bull fighting. Montpellier
is the capital, and is a huge, lively and majestic city.
The landscape is stunning. A gentle, sandy coastline, including the Camargue,
which is marshland reaching to the sea, where you can see flamingos during
the summer. Further inland is rugged, rocky and mountainous. The inland countryside
is remote and dry, making the walled cities appear all the more exciting
and romantic. This region is also real cowboy country.
Gastronomy: The mediterranean flavours of olive oil, tomatoes,
garlic, herbs and seafood shape the cuisine of this area. Local specialities
include brandade, a creamy cod paste, which is served on toast with lemon
juice and black pepper, and mackerel cooked in white wine. The is also a
Spanish influence in spicy dishes of squid cooked with tomatoes.
