French Region - Limousin
( Corrèze, Creuse, Haute-Vienne)

The Limousin region of France has 3 departments, consisting of the Corrèze, Creuse and the Haute-Vienne

Weather: There are rarely extremes of temperature in Limousin, where the winters are cool and the summers are warm. The regular rainfall keeps the countryside green and the rivers rushing, but the summers are generally good anyway.

The Region: : Limousin is a lush, green region, of verdant rolling countryside. Stone farm buildings, picturesque medieval villages, châteaux and churchesnestle amongst the soft landscape. The famous Limousin fawn-coloured cows munch in rich green fields and rivers rush through deep ravines. Known as France’s Lake District, Limousin has loads of water-based activities on offer, as well as the beautiful sights.

Limoges is the capital of Limousin, and a centre of porcelain production. It is a large and lively city, which is well placed among some of the region’s tourist attractions: Among walking, canoeing, and vibrant markets are excursions such as Château de Chalus, which was the final resting place of Richard the Lionheart, who spent much of his life in France, defending the English territories. Another interesting and thought-provoking visit is the village of Ordadour sur Glane, which was chosen by the Germans in WW2 for a massacre as an example to the resistance-strong region. Nothing has been moved since the day of the killings. Limousin remembers its difficulties during the war, but has now once again embraced its identity as a green land of small rural farms, with the simple pleasures of clean air and good food.

Gastronomy: Limousin’s main food product is meat, which is fattened on all that bright green grass. Beef, pork and lamb are farmed here, and regularly feature in local dishes. All the fruit trees also contribute to the local gastronomy, both in cakes like ‘clafoutis’, and liqueurs. Plenty of wild food, like freshwater fish, chestnuts and mushrooms, are used in the wholesome regional cuisine.
